- What structural factors are contributing to Raul’s problems? The lack of power within the political system are contributing to Raul’s problem. His academic performance at a larger school is starting to be a risk factor in learning.
- Are there social institutions that are reflecting how the school is responding to Raul and the family? I think that the school may be lacking some type of health care counselor that is no acknowledging Raul and his transition to the bigger school. This can play within the schools budget that the position does not fit in with their financial budget that interferes with the economy.
- Do you see evidence of prejudice? I see that Raul is being compared to the other Puerto Rican children in his class. His teacher says that she is surprised by his vocabulary and it is “much better that any other Puerto Rican in the class”. The teacher is comparing them ethnically. Also, Raul’s father has a tough time at work because his boss does not like Puerto Ricans. Where he is scheduled with bad jobs and low paying wages. These are some prejudice behavior I see with Raul’s case.
- Is there evidence of cultural conflicts in this case? Raul Salazar and his family are at risk for cultural conflict. Being Puerto Rican, there are many negative attitudes in the new community at school and work for the family.
- What social systems are playing a role in his problems, if any? The social systems are playing a role in his problems; school, family and economy.
- What influence do social system variables have on the etiology of his conditions? Because of Raul’s ethnicity, the social system variables are influencing etiology conditions. Suppose he was still at a smaller school getting a closer student to teacher ratio, his academic performance could have positive outcomes with less risks. All of his environment and surroundings have an impact within the social system.

7. Describe and contrast the key theoretical assumptions underlying the structural functional and conflict theories of human behavior.
In order for a social system to survive it must meet four functional principals; adaptation, goal attainment, integration and latent pattern maintenance. Adaptation is learning to change with the environment. The goal attainment is fulfilled by the administrative system and in terms of distribution power. Integration deals with social class and focuses on norms and legal issues. And the pattern maintenance is fulfilled by socialization dealing with mostly schools and family problems. 8. Differentiate between treatment orientated and task orientated groups. Treatment oriented are support groups within education, therapy, growth and socialization. The purpose of treatment oriented is to focus on meeting the client’s life span developmental needs. Task orientated groups are focused on accomplishing a specific task. 9. Describe and evaluate key factors that account for group influences on human behavior. There are any factors that contribute to group influences. Norms are unwritten expectations within the group, these are predicted behaviors within the group that set the vibe. Individual roles can play a contributing factor with influencing a group. The role of a person is a form of a certain behavior. When the group accepts individual roles, it enhances the effectiveness within. Strong communication skills whether it is nonverbal or verbal also reflect the nature of the group. This is key to understanding each other and to set your role in the group. Establishing the status and power in a group can alter the decision or influence the group’s decision of other individuals. All of these factors lead up to the cohesiveness of the groups bond. How strong are the relationships within the group? Does one person have an aggressive powerful role that makes others feel bashful or embarrassed so the group is intimidated? The factors that make a cohesive are ones that promote positive change and with similar attitudes and goals. 10. Critically evaluate the utility of different conceptualizations of community. There is no agreed theory on the conceptualization of community. In premodern times community was to be a geographical location where a person lived and shared the same values and beliefs as everyone else they knew. One of the present day concepts of community is considered to be an urban area such as a neighborhood where a person feels a sense of identification. 11. Describe different approaches to understanding formal organizations. Formal organization is a macro social group focused on achieving specific goals. These relationships within the organization are based on each person’s position and role within the group. 12. Apply the intersection of the concepts of ethnically and social class in assessing Raul Salazar’s circumstances. Raul’s father was a New York City painter, and his mother is a teacher’s assistant. These two jobs are not considered dominant jobs that are high paying. This puts his family in the middle class. This could impact Raul in school because his parents were not able to provide some school supplies or books needed to help Raul succeed. Also, this is a concern when Raul came to class wearing dirty clothes. His parents may be struggling with providing necessary sanitary problems. Whether it be not having access to a laundry unit or not being able to afford laundry detergent or simply cannot replace clothing when it is worn though. The Salazar family is Puerto Rican. It was stated that Mr. Salazar’s boss does not like Puerto Ricans thus giving him low paying wages and the worst job assignments. This results into why Raul’s father is under so much pressure at work and taking it out on his kids when he gets home from work. This effects Raul emotionally. 13. Identify the characteristics of aversive forms of racism. Aversive racism can be automatic or unconscious made. Automatic racisms are biases towards people from other racial groups. Unconscious racism is a thought/feeling without implying reasoning for the substantial thought. 14. Compare and contrast the similarities and differences between sexism and homophobia. Sexism is the belief that one’s gender is superior of the other gender. Homophobia is the fear of homosexuality. They are similar between the two is the unfair treatment of discrimination based on sex or gender. 15. Identify and describe the central tenets of queer theory. Queer theory is a set of ideas applied in ways to gender and sexuality. Inclusively, gay men, lesbian, bisexuals, transgender and an endless list of others that are marginalized by their sexuality. These theorists have a few tenets; sexuality is a historically specific construct, society systematically opposes the “outside” categories of sexual normalcy and homophobia is a structural problem. Beyond these basic tenets, there are many other theories against politics against men, women and transgender against their identity. 16. Identify at least two tools for conducting spiritual assessment with Native Americans. There are five basic tools that conduct assessments when reflecting upon Native American Norms. I will identify two; genograms and spiritual ecograms. Genograms is basically a family tree display of a person’s hereditary relationships and medical history. Spiritual ecograms are tools used to measure relevance and consistency of cultural competence. Describe what differentiates relational aggression from other forms of aggression.
Relational aggression is a behavior mostly shown by females. It is an act between two or more persons threatening the relationship between them. Examples of this are gossiping, spreading rumors, name calling etc. There is physical aggression that is dominantly occurred by males than females. That is physical contact with another person; hitting, punching, pushing, kicking etc. Another form of aggression is verbal insults, where males and females are very close in poll. What are the potential consequences of relational forms of aggression? There are long term effects that form from relation aggression are mostly from the victims, such as anxiety, depression, academic problems, and unfulfilling relationships with peers and ongoing use of aggression towards others. |
