- Red flag or indicator areas (red flags is defined as issues that may become possible problems within the developmental process). The third trimester of Mrs. Salazar’s pregnancy with Raul she was bed ridden by doctors’ orders. This was because of high stress/anxiety levels. About fourth months after Maria was born, Mrs. Salazar had a seizure. She had claimed that she never had one before but always had high nerves and a history of fainting when she was a teenager. The doctor did consider putting her on medication but testing results came out negative. With Mrs. Salazar showing such dramatic behavior, this could be a developmental barrier with her children.
- Biological changes for first trimester, second trimester, third trimester, and hormones (all of the information may not be in the case study and application information from the text may be needed). In the first trimester the mother will experience symptoms of nausea, fatigue, frequent urination and breast tenderness. This stage is where the baby will develop the most. The second trimester is when symptoms from the first trimester begin to decrease. The baby will also begin to move and the mother can feel the movement in her belly. The mother will mostly experience soreness, back pain, heart burn and constipation. The third trimester is the last. The mother will be able to feel the baby move more such as when it hiccups or breathing motions. She will experience sleeping problems, shortness of breath and hemorrhoids. The two main hormones that are present during pregnancy are estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen is a steroid hormone that promotes the development of the female characteristics of the body. Progesterone is another steroid hormone that is released and stimulates the uterus to prepare for pregnancy.
- Are there indicators other than age to consider Maria’s a high risk pregnancy? Maria was Mrs. Salazar’s third and last child. Maria was born prematurely and it was very hard on the family. This is where Mrs. Salazar identity’s her nerves being at the ultimate high of her life. Stress plays an emotional factor on the child coming from the mother. Mr. Salazar has also lost his job shortly after the birth of Maria. This could lead to poverty. With a low paying job as a Teacher’s Assistant, there will be financial struggles for the family.
- What are the different risk factors for pregnancy? Include age, poverty and cultural factors. If a woman is under 18 or over 35, there are many factors that increase the risk of illness. Under the age of 18 there is a higher chance of infant mental retardation, sudden infant death and pregnancy complications. They are also less likely to obtain prenatal care than older women. Over the age of 35, may lead to multiple gestation births. Poverty is risk for pregnancy that is just as important as any other risk factor. If a pregnant female is unable to provide nutritious meals and supplements to physically care for herself and the child, they will both be effected. Dehydration and malnourishment are health concerns for the mother and her growing child. If the mother is lacking resources and necessary living essentials it will lead to environmental factors for the family..Cultural contributes to how one family can raise a family versus another. If a mother is not married, this could deny her help at a certain religious based care facility. The beliefs or customs of a person that differs to your own can be a risk in pregnancy.
